Brighton Sisters Shine in Graz Competition

Brighton’s own Astatine Trio, featuring sisters Berniya and Riya Hamie alongside Slovenian violinist Maja Horvat, has made a remarkable splash on the international music scene. The talented trio recently clinched second prize and a special award for the best performance of the prizewinning set work at the prestigious 12th Franz Schubert and Modern Music Competition in Graz. This is a historic achievement, marking the first time a UK-based ensemble has secured a major prize at this globally renowned competition.

The trio captivated audiences with an impressive repertoire, performing pieces by Schubert, Haydn, Ravel, Hans Werner Henze, Wolfgang Rihm, and Xiaowen Lei. Their performances spanned three intense rounds from 8-13 February 2025, held at the esteemed Kunstuniversität Graz. The Astatine Trio’s success has firmly established them as one of the leading ensembles to emerge from this competition’s illustrious history.

Brighton locals, Berniya and Riya Hamie, began their musical journey at BHASVIC and are currently honing their craft at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Music. Despite their growing international acclaim, the sisters remain deeply connected to their roots, frequently performing in the Sussex area.
